Behind the headstones and memorials of South Brisbane Cemetery lies a deeply moving history—one of sacrifice, survival, and remembrance.
Join us for this special commemorative tour, where we honor the lives of those who served — both the ones who never returned and the ones who did, only to carry the weight of war for the rest of their days. As we walk through the cemetery, we’ll uncover stories that challenge what we know about war, remembrance, and sacrifice, including:
🕊️ Symbolism and styles of war graves — what are their hidden meanings, and what do they tell us?
🌺 The stories of the fallen — those lost on foreign soil and those who fought their final battles at home.
🎖️ The origins and mission of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
❓ How new research poses the question: Were all who received a ‘war grave’ truly eligible?
This tour offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the past, honor the sacrifices made, and uncover the lesser-known history of those who served.

All of our tours are not-for-profit, with all money raised going to our cemetery history and maintenance projects.
Prices
- Single bookings: $10 per person.
Walking difficulty
- Moderate (Grade 3) – Please be aware, given the ageing nature of the cemetery, this tour involves walking [slowly] up hills predominantly over generally modified terrain [hardened earth, less than 1200mm wide], mostly clear of intrusions & obstacles. Please advise us of any relevant medical concerns prior to attending the tour.

- 1½ hours [tour times can vary, depending on levels of customer interaction during the tour].
Age level
- This tour is suitable for ages 6 years and up.
Private and Easy Access Tours
We can organise a Private Access tour just for your own group of friends. We also run Easy Access tours for groups with mobility issues. You can select any available tour type you want. Minimum cost is $225 for up to 15 people (extra people $15 per person).
